Manufactured Fragment Study #1

John Rainey

ABOUT THE WORK
Manufactured Fragment Study #2 is a 3D printed sculpture with a cast Jesmonite base. The work takes the form of a museum replica from an imagined, possibly digital space, where broken fragments are illogically artificial and purposefully produced. The rust coloured section refers to the retrofitted braces often seen on ancient columns, with the aim of restricting the natural tendencies of their materials. The sculpture’s edition number is embedded in the 3D printed section of the piece.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
John Rainey works primarily in sculpture, combining traditional casting processes in materials like porcelain with digital fabrication technologies such as 3D printing. His sculptures emerge from periods working back and forth between these digital and physical worlds, often featuring material illusions and a disruption of familiar forms.
