DEEP SMELLING PROTOCOLS - JAN UPRICHARD

£40.00

TITLE
Deep Smelling Protocols

ARTIST
Jan Uprichard

ABOUT THE WORK
Deep Smelling is a meditative, experiential practice, that brings attention to our sense of smell. It is inspired by renowned composer Pauline Oliveros’ Deep Listening.  These Deep Smelling protocol cards have been designed as practical, tactile tools with a sculptural quality. Developed in collaboration with Simon Goode at London Centre for Book Arts (LCBA), the set is housed in a stapled cardboard box typically used for storing nails, screws, and other everyday materials. This intentional design choice resists the notion of the artwork as a precious object, instead inviting regular use, handling, and exploration. The matte surface, exposed staples, and rough edges of the box foreground its haptic qualities. An ergonomic pencil and a set of blank cards, made from offcuts sourced from the LCBA workshop, are included to encourage note-taking, journalling, reflection, and the creation of new protocols. The result is an artwork that functions both as a contemplative tool and an invitation to develop a deeper relationship with the sensory world.
