Charys Wilson’s practice centres on installation and small-scale sculptural works. Drawing on a background in printmaking, her attention is often directed towards alignment, layering and the subtle relationships between materials, light and space. Elements of the outside are brought indoors, creating quiet encounters through illusion, mimicry, light and shadow.
ARTIST BIO
Charys Wilson (b. 1994, Donegal, Ireland) is an artist based in Belfast. She completed a BA in Fine Art, specialising in Printmaking, at Aberystwyth University, Wales, in 2015, before graduating with an MFA from Ulster University, Belfast, in 2022, where she developed her installation-based practice. During her MFA, Wilson received the Alice Berger Hammerschlag Award, the CCA Graduate Award and the Golden Thread Gallery Graduate Award, and was shortlisted for the RDS Visual Arts Awards. She has undertaken residencies with TAKT, Berlin (2017, 2022 and 2024), the Magnetic Fluxus Residency with Frac Grand Large in Dunkirk, France (2024), and, with support from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, completed a residency at Studio Kura in Fukuoka, Japan (2024). Recent solo exhibitions include Half Light at the University of Atypical, Belfast (2025); Traces of Time at CCA Centre for Contemporary Art, Derry–Londonderry (2023); Losing Eden at Berlin Weekly, Berlin (2023); and Spaces Between at the Golden Thread Gallery, Belfast (2022). Her work is held in the public collection of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.

fuelled by an awareness of the climate crisis and a growing disconnection from the natural world, Wilson creates ephemeral environments that feel at once sparse and deeply resonant.

Her work seeks to gently still the viewer, inviting both physical and mental pause. Through familiar forms that are abstracted and distilled, she creates spaces that encourage contemplation, presence and reflection. Light, both natural and artificial, is central to this process, shaping the atmosphere of each work and the experience of moving through it.

ABOUT THE WORK
On silent air is a new edition of works the size of a handheld tablet by Charys Wilson. The plants and flowers featured in this edition of 10 individual works have been sourced from the immediate vicinity of The Living House, North Belfast; a collaboration between Household and MMAS Architects to inhabit and re-animate the building as a site for artistic and social exchange They create domestic landscapes intended for the home, which, through recycled polarised TV screens, provide partly obscured glimpses of organic growth. On silent air speaks of a mediated, digitalised, and disembodied experience of accessing a rapidly fading, tactile natural world through a technological interface.
